Uno de los jóvenes talentos de la trompeta, muy discutido en sus inicios, por emplear técnicas que recordaban a Davis. Es un completo estudioso del Jazz clásico acústico y sus conocimientos le permiten el dominio de técnicas de antaño.
En los años 80, fue muy bien recibido que músicos negros jóvenes eligieran tocar jazz acústico en tiempos de fusión, funk y R & B. El buen hacer de Wynton Marsalis en escena dio lugar a que los principales sellos discográficos se interesaran por el género que habían dejado a un lado en la última década, promoviendo a nuevos artistas jóvenes.
Desde que Miles Davis dominó el género durante los 60’s apenas había surgido alguna alternativa hasta que el quinteto de Marsalis tomó como punto de partida los supuestos acústicos de Davis.
Wynton comienza tocando y (destacando) en los Jazz Messengers, con claras influencias de Freddie Hubbard y Miles Davis, y habiendo sacado provecho de estilos anteriores (como el uso del wah-wah de Armstrong y el estudio de armonías de Duke Ellington) no tarda en crear su propio estilo y convertirse en uno de los grandes, con influencia en toda una nueva generación (es conocida la ayuda a Roy Hargrove, al respecto).
El disco que traigo es una recopilación de momentos mágicos grabados por Wynton en discos de música clásica entre 1984 y 1998, e incluye el tema Variaciones sobre el Carnaval de Venecia (tema 15), del libro de prácticas con que se inició en la trompeta siendo niño, el fabuloso Vuelo del Moscardón y alguno que otro de los que rebotan, conocidísimo y no sabemos de qué, por nuestro cerebro.
