Nacido en Okmulgee de Oklahoma, el 30 de septiembre de 1922 y fallecido en Copenhague el 8 de septiembre de 1960, Oscar Pettiford fue un músico de jazz estadounidense, compositor y contrabajista, conocido por ser pionero del bebop.
Oscar Pettiford nació en una reserva india en Oklahoma. Su madre era una Choctaw, profesora de música y pianista; su padre Harry "Doc" Pettiford, mitad Cherokee y mitad afroamericano, era veterinario y músico aficionado. Los orígenes nativos de Pettiford sin embargo fueron conocidos sólo por unos pocos amigos (entre ellos David Avram).
Oscar comenzó a estudiar piano, para a continuación, pasar al bajo a los 14 años. Empezó a tocar y salir de gira con el grupo familiar que su padre crea cuando decidió retirarse. En su grupo debutó Cannonball Adderley; uno de los miembros lo convenció para hacer subir al escenario a un profesor de música entonces desconocido, y Pettiford le pidió que hiciera un solo en una pieza difícil: la prestación de Adderley maravilló a todos.

Oscar Pettiford fue (junto con Charles Mingus) el mejor bajista del período 1945-1960. Sucesor del fallecido Jimmy Blanton, fue el primer solista de jazz importante en utilizar el violonchelo. Pionero, hubiera sido muy interesante escuchar lo que Pettiford habría hecho durante la vanguardia de los '60 si no hubiera fallecido inesperadamente en 1960.
Después de comenzar con el piano, Pettiford cambió al contrabajo cuando tenía 14 años y tocaba en la banda familiar.
